The Ottawa Jewish Community School (www.theojcs.ca) is a Jewish day school for students between Kindergarten and Grade 8. The OJCS is dedicated to enriching the lives of its students along with strengthening their character and instilling their love for Israel. Inspired by Jewish values and heritage, a love of learning, and guided by innovative teaching practices, the students at the OJCS reach for their potential to become the leaders of tomorrow, and responsible citizens of the world.
In March of 2018 I began employment at the OJCS as an Occasional Teacher. I have enjoyed my time with the staff and students at this school so very much, as I am finding that my teaching style and the mission of the school align well. In only a few months I found myself feeling like a welcomed and valued member of the OJCS community and truly enjoy each day I get to step in and am entrusted with the care and education of the OJCS students. My experience has centered more around Junior and Intermediate grades, however I am excited to branch out and gain even more experience in all areas of the school. |
For my second year in the Bachelor of Education program at the University of Ottawa, I had the privilege of a Practicum placement at St. Michael Catholic School in Ottawa. As I already had a year of in-class teaching experience under my belt, the format of the year was organized a little differently for year 2. For starters, I was immersed in the classroom right away. My first two weeks of school coincided with the first two weeks of school for my students - I spent the entire school day in the classroom with my Associate Teachers and students from September 6-16. This give me the opportunity to experience exactly how teachers begin their year, how they explain expectations, enforce behaviors and establish routines. I was also given the opportunity to build relationships with my students and fellow faculty members right away, something which I believe is the backbone of a successful year. Following these two weeks, I spent every Wednesday until November 2 in the classroom with my grade 4/5 students. Finally, from November 7-December 16 I completed my evaluated Practicum every day. The in-school portion of the program was only four months this year, and just like it always does, it absolutely flew by.

Year 1: Community Service Learning and PracticumSeptember 2015-April 2016What is Community Service Learning?
Community Service Learning (CSL) is an academic program and form of experiential learning which allows students to contribute to their communities while gaining valuable in-class experience. These professor-approved community service placements are linked to specific course learning objectives with the Teacher Education Program. Students log their time spent in the classroom and then produce corresponding reflective assignments based on such experiences. |
